Brownsnakes are found in forest regions and diverse habitats including surburban or even urban areas. Because of their small size, colour and secretive habits, they are rarely seen. They can be found under logs, rocks, boards, leaves and other cover.
They feed on a variety of small invertebrates such as insects, worms and slugs. They are primarily nocturnal but can be seen during the day as well. They overwinter communally underground or in building foundations.
