American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla)
- HABITAT - American Redstarts prefer second-growth woodlands. They are a widespread species that occur from Alaska to Newfoundland, Northwest USA and Eastern USA. They winter in Southwest USA, Mexico, Central America and into South America.
- DIET - American Redstarts act a lot like flycatchers as they prefer to catch their prey on the wing instead of picking them off the vegetation. They feed on a wide variety of insects, spiders and some seeds and berries.
- FACTS - They flash the coloured patterns of their plumage to startle prey and flush it from vegetation. The female builds the nest by herself in about 3-7 days. The nest is a tightly woven cup of small fibers, such as birch bark strips, twigs, grass, milkweed seed, lichens and mosses, hairs and feathers.
