Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea)
- HABITAT - Prothonotary Warblers habitat is wooded swamps, lakeshores, ponds and slow moving rivers. They winter in the tropics in lowland woods and mangrove swamps.
- DIET - These warblers eat spiders, insects, snails and mollusks. During the nonbreeding season they eat fruit and seeds in addition to insects.
- FACTS - In Canada, this warbler is only known to nest in swampy areas in southwestern Ontario. In 2007, the population was estimated to be between 28 to 34 individuals only. Fortunately, there is a decent population of Prothonotary Warblers in the Southeastern States of the U.S.
- Prothonotary Warblers nest in cavities created by woodpeckers or other birds as well as natural holes in standing dead trees. They will also use nest boxes.
