Palm Warbler (Setophaga palmarum)
- HABITAT - Palm Warblers breed mainly in Canada’s boreal forest but during migration or on wintering grounds, they foraging in open areas. They spend the winters in the Caribbean and in a narrow strip along the southeastern United States and occasionally along the West Coast. We have seen them among the palm trees in Cuba.
- DIET - Palm Warblers eat insects during the breeding season. During the fall and winter, Palm Warblers feast on seeds, insects, and berries as well as nectar.
- FACTS - Palm Warblers are constant tail-waggers. They also forage mainly on the ground or in low vegetation. Even in the wintering grounds, we seen them mostly feeding on the ground and retreating to the palm trees when people approached.
- The Palm Warbler nests in far northern bogs, so one would think it was another misnamed bird. However, they do hang out in palm trees in the winter and are named accordingly.
