Bay-breasted Warbler (Dendroica castanea)
- HABITAT -The Bay-breasted Warbler prefers to nest in mature dense boreal forest of of eastern and central Canada. They winter in the wet lowland forests of northeastern South America and southern Central America.
- DIET - In the breeding season, Bay-breasted Warblers feed primarily on insects and spiders, especially the spruce budworm. In the winter dry season, when insects numbers are low, they may shift to small fruits.
- FACTS - This warbler, like the Cape May and Tennessee Warblers, increases in numbers during years of spruce budworm outbreaks in its breeding areas.
- Each year, during migration, we usually get a short backyard visit from a Bay-breasted Warbler. They fuel up on our cedars in mid afternoon and then move on.
