Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina)
- HABITAT - Chipping Sparrow breeds throughout most of the continent from Alaska to Newfoundland south to Florida, and Mexico. Northern breeders migrate and spend winters across southern U.S. southward into Mexico. Preferred habitats include grassy woodland edges, open woods, gardens, pastures, and lawns.
- DIET - Chipping sparrows forage primarily on or near the ground, feasting on insects and seeds and some smaller fruits. We occasionally have them visit our backyard feeders during the warmer months.
- FACTS - The Chipping Sparrow is one of the easier to identify among the little brown jobs because of their rufous cap and white chest. They are also one of the smaller sparrows in our area. The head pattern of the Chipping Sparrow changes in fall and winter.
