American Tree Sparrow (Spizelloides arborea)
- HABITAT - In spite of the name, American Tree Sparrows are ground birds. During spring and fall migrations, they'll search out weedy fields, marshes, hedgerows, and open forests for foraging between nights of flying. They summer in the arctic willow and birch thickets, fields, weedy woodland edges, and along roadside thickets in winter.
- DIET - The summer diet of the American Tree Sparrow is mostly insects and other small invertebrates, plus a some seeds. Their diet in winter is almost entirely seeds from grasses and weeds.
- FACTS - The American Tree Sparrow nests and winters farther north than any other sparrow. In our area during some years, we do have a visit from these sparrows visit our backyard feeders during the winter.
- The name is somewhat misleading for this ground dwelling bird. They were named by the European settlers because these sparrows reminded them of Eurasian Tree Sparrows back home.
