Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus)
- HABITAT - Eastern Towhee preferred habitat includes forest edges, overgrown fields and woodlands, and thickets. Their breeding range is from southern Saskatchewan east to Maine and south to Gulf Coast to Florida and winters in south eastern United States. Northern populations of the Eastern Towhee are migratory while the southern populations are year-round residents.
- DIET - Towhees eat seeds, fruits, buds and a variety of invertebrates. They are primarily ground feeders, but will gladly glean from vegetation as well.
- FACTS - The Eastern Towhee and the very similar Spotted Towhee of western North America used to be considered the same species, the Rufous-sided Towhee.
- The Towhee is part of the sparrow family even though they are remarkably larger than most other species in the family.
