Common Redpoll (Acanthis flammea)
- HABITAT - Redpolls are true Northern birds spending the summer in the high Arctic. Their range is circumpolar. Common Redpolls move south irregularly in winter following patterns in food supply.
- DIET - Redpolls eat mainly seeds and other vegetable matter. This would include catkins, seeds, and buds of willows, alders, and birches, small conifer seeds, weeds and grass seeds. In the summer, they will also eat a variety of insects.
- FACTS - To keep warm during the long winter nights, some Common Redpolls will tunnel over a foot into the insulating snow.
