Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea)
- HABITAT - In the summer, Indigo Buntings breed in brushlands, open forests, clearings, and woodland edges. Their range includes all of eastern USA and some southeastern Canada.
- DIET - In breeding season Indigo Buntings feeds mostly on insects and spiders, also some seeds, berries. In winter, eats many seeds, also some insects.
- Facts - The adult males are a brilliant indigo blue all over, while the females are mostly brown with a whitish throat. In our area, some years, Indigo Buntings can be a very rare sighting.
- The male actually has black feathers and it is the diffraction of light that gives them their blue colouring. As the images here suggest, this can often make them appear in a number of different shades depending on lighting conditions.
