House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus)
- HABITAT - House Finch is a non-migratory bird that lives throughout the US, Mexico and a few southern tips of Canada. In Canada, they can be found in southern BC, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Southern Quebec and Southern Ontario. Their preferred habitat is mostly urban landscapes such as lawns and parks. In rural areas, the reside around barns and other buildings.
- DIET -The House Finch diet is exclusively vegetarian. They eat seeds, berries, nuts, fruit and buds. They can be frequent visitors of bird feeders. In our backyard, they will also eat from the orange slices of our oriole feeder.
- FACTS - The House Finch was originally a western bird. In the 1940’s some were brought to New York where they tried to sell them as caged birds. Some were let loose on Long Island as quickly started breeding, spreading throughout eastern US and Canada to the point that the east have almost reached the western population. - Years back, their numbers were much higher than they are today. A contributing cause could be a disease that called mycoplasmal conjunctivitis. This disease causes swollen eyes and breathing problems.
