American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis)
- HABITAT - American Goldfinch prefers trees in open places, especially in orchards, parks and along roadsides. They breed across southern Canada and through most of the United States north of the Gulf states. Goldfinches don’t migrate very far south come winter.
- DIET - Goldfinches are entirely vegetarians and enjoy an abundant food supply for much of the year, including seeds of thistle, dandelion, ragweed, mullein, cosmos, goatsbeard, sunflower, and alder.
- FACTS - Male American Goldfinch are a bright yellow with a black cap during the summer. In the winter, the males moult and become similar in colour to the females with a buff-coloured underparts and olive brown above and black wings with white bars.
