Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)
- HABITAT - Dark-eyed Juncos breed in forests across much of Canada, Northeastern USA and the mountainous western states. They are often found in coniferous forests but also in some deciduous forests. During winter and on migration they use a wider variety of habitats including open woodlands, fields, roadsides, parks, and gardens.
- DIET - Dark-eyed Juncos eat mainly seed. In the summer, they will also eat a variety of insects.
- FACTS - Dark-eyed Juncos hangout in our backyard for most of the winter. In the spring, we suddenly notice one day that they have left for their northern breeding grounds. We love their song that sounds like they are playing the space invaders video game.
