Veery (Catharus fuscescens)
- HABITAT - The Veery preferred habitat includes dense, moist deciduous woodlands, usually close to a water source. The Veery breeds in the northern U.S. and parts of southern Canada. They spend the winters in Brazil in the shadowy undergrowth of tropical rain forest.
- DIET - The Veery feeds primarily on insects such as beetles, flies, grasshoppers, wasps, and crickets. Various small fruits make up a large portion of its diet during the summer and fall. The Veery forages by walking along the forest floor or among low foliage.
- FACTS - In our humble opinion, the Song of the Veery is one of the most beautiful of all North American birds. We used to hear it while camping as a child and wondered what could possible make such a gorgeous music. They have a few different calls. Their first call is a single syllable that sounds like “Tchew”. But our favourite is a two voice downward spiralling flute like melody that echoes through the woods, usually at dawn and in the early evening.
