Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea)
- HABITAT - Scarlet Tanagers breeds mostly in deciduous forest, mainly where oaks are common but also in maple, beech, and other trees. The summer is spent in eastern USA and southern eastern Canada. Winters in tropical rain forest in lowlands just east of the Andes.
- DIET - In summer, Scarlet Tanagers feed mainly on insects, spiders, snails, worms, millipedes. Also eats wild fruits and berries. They forages in tall trees seeking insects among the foliage.
- FACTS - Scarlet Tanagers are strong fliers and migrating long distances in fall and spring
- When capturing bees, wasps, and hornets Scarlet tanagers rake their prey against a branch to remove their stingers before consumption.
