Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor)
- HABITAT - Tree Swallows prefer to nest near or in wetlands, such as marshes, swamps, beaver ponds, and wet meadows. If there’s a shortage of natural nest sites, Tree Swallows quickly accept nest boxes, even ones far from water. Tree Swallows winter from Florida and the Gulf Coast south into Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
- DIET - Tree Swallows are aerial insectivores with a diet composed of flying insects caught, most often, in flight. Thy will also eat some molluscs, spiders, and fruit.
- Tree Swallows winter farther north than any other American swallows and return to their nesting grounds long before other swallows come back.
- Their scientific name is Tachycineta bicolor. Tachycineta is from a Greek word meaning “moving quickly”
