HABITAT - Northern Rough-winged Swallows are usually found near water along sandy, coastal cliffs or rivers with high, sandy banks and nearby open areas. They also nest in man-made banks. Northern Rough-winged Swallows are common throughout the United States and southern Canada during the summer. Tree Swallows winter from Florida and the Gulf Coast south into Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Northern Rough-winged Swallows migrate to Mexico and Central America.
DIET - Northern Rough-winged Swallows feed almost exclusively on flying insects.
FACTS - Northern Rough-winged Swallows nest in burrows created by other animals such as kingfishers, squirrels, and Bank Swallows. The nests are in clay, sand, or gravel banks, typically near water.
