Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna)
- HABITAT - Eastern Meadowlarks breed primarily in moderately tall grasslands, such as pastures and hayfields. Eastern Meadowlarks is found in the eastern United States, as well as parts of the southwest U.S. and Central America. Some Eastern Meadowlark’s summer breeding range includes parts of southern Canada. In Ontario, the Eastern meadowlark is a “Species at Risk” with a status of “Threatened”.
- DIET - Eastern Meadowlarks eat mostly insects, including crickets, grasshoppers, caterpillars, and grubs. During winter they also eat weed seeds, grains and wild fruits.
- FACTS - Eastern Meadowlark numbers are shrinking due to changes in land use and the loss of suitable habitat due to development, farming practices and pesticides.
