HABITAT - The Black-capped Chickadee is a nonmigratory, North American songbird that lives in deciduous and mixed forests. They live across central North America, absent in the far north and far south.
DIET - Black-capped Chickadee are omnivorous. They eat a diet of seeds, berries, insects, invertebrates, and occasionally small portions of carrion. Insects form a large part of their diet in summer. Black-capped Chickadees hop along tree branches searching for food, sometimes hanging upside down or hovering; they may make short flights to catch insects in the air. Seeds and berries become more important in winter along with insect eggs and pupae if available. Black oil sunflower seeds are readily taken from bird feeders. The birds take a seed in their beak and commonly fly from the feeder to a tree, where they proceed to hammer the seed on a branch to open it. Black-capped Chickadee commonly cache food.
Black-capped Chickadee are cute and friendly In the winter, they will often take food from human hands. We also love there song which sounds like “Cheese Burger” or there name “ Chickadee dee dee”. They are our favourite bird species and we think the Black-capped Chickadee should be Canada's official bird.
