Grey Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis)
- HABITAT - Grey Catbirds nest and feed in dense shrubby areas in gardens, woods and hedgerows along fields. They live in temperate North America east of the Rocky Mountains and migrate to the southeastern United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean in winter.
- DIET - In summer, Grey Catbirds will eat mostly earthworms, ants, beetles, grasshoppers, caterpillars, and moths. They also eat fruit and berries.
- FACTS - Grey Catbirds can be secretive and are very difficult to approach most of the time. When approached, they often hide in the dense thickets and disappear out of sight.
- Grey Catbirds get their name from their cat like calls. Like many members of the Mimidae, it also mimics the songs of other bird and other sounds.
- Gray catbirds eat a lot of pest insects. They may particularly important in controlling damaging species of moth and butterfly larvae, such as gypsy moth caterpillars.
