Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus)
- HABITAT - Eurasian Whimbrel is fairly widespread, breeding across much of subarctic Asia and Europe as far south as Scotland. The Eurasian Whimbrel and the Hudsonian whimbrel have recently been split. North American Whimbrels breed in subarctic and alpine tundra and taiga. On their wintering grounds, Whimbrels feed mostly on tidal mudflats and sandflats.
- DIET - Whimbrels eat mostly molluscs, worms, crustaceans and insects. They also dine on berries.
- FACTS - Some migrating Whimbrels will fly, nonstop over the ocean (4,000 km) from southern Canada or New England to South America.
