Common Tern (Sterna hirundo)
- HABITAT - Common Tern has a circumpolar distribution, breeding in temperate and subarctic regions of Europe, Asia and North America. It is strongly migratory, wintering in coastal tropical and subtropical regions.
- DIET - Common Terns mainly eat fish, but also consume shrimps and other crustaceans, small squid, marine worms, and leeches.
- FACTS - Common Tern populations were severely depleted in late 19th century for hat-making trade, but, with protection, with are recovering.
- The males do a mating ritual that includes a practice called courtship feeding. The male offers a prospective female fish. If she accepts his gift, they may soon create a bond.
