Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata)
- HABITAT - Wilson’s Snipes can be found in all types of wetlands, mudflats and shorelines of rivers and ponds. In the South, Wilson’s Snipes winter in rice and sugarcane fields. They breed coast to coast in northern U.S. and Canada. They winter in the southern US and as far south as South America.
- DIET - Wilson’s Snipes feed mainly on insects that burrow in damp soil or live in shallow water, such as larvae of crane flies, horse flies and beetles and earthworms. They may also eats leeches, crustaceans, mollusks, spiders, frogs, leaves, seeds.
- FACTS - Probably far more abundant at one time, Snipes were heavily reduced by market hunting in late 19th century and by loss of habitat.
