Semipalmated Plover (Charadrius semipalmatus)
- HABITAT - Semipalmated Plover breeds throughout the North American Arctic and subarctic, on sandy or mossy tundra , on gravel bars along rivers and ponds. During migration they can be found on beaches, mudflats, shallow pools in salt marshes, and lakeshores.
- DIET - On breeding grounds and during migration inland, Semipalmated Plovers eat mostly insects, crustaceans, worms. On coast, eats many marine worms, crustaceans, small mollusks. They feed by running a few steps and then pausing, then running again, pecking at the ground whenever they spot something edible.
- FACTS - It is hard to believe these small beautiful bird were hunted to near extinction in the late 19th Century. Thankfully they have since recovered.
