Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)
- HABITAT - The osprey is a widely distributed raptor species and is one of only six land-birds with a worldwide distribution.
- DIET - The vast majority of the Osprey's diet is fish. Only occasionally, when fish aren't available, will the Osprey eat small mammals, birds, or reptiles.
- Ospreys are very successful hunters. They circle over shallow waters to locate fish below the surface. Once they locate a fish, they hover briefly and then dive into the water feet-first, sometimes becoming completely submerged.
- FACTS - After fledging, the young remain with their parents for up to two months. Northern born juveniles remain at their wintering grounds for two to three years before returning north to make their first attempt at breeding.
