Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)
- HABITAT - The Red-tailed Hawk breeds throughout most of North America, from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. It is one of the most common members within the genus of Buteo in North America or worldwide
- DIET - The Red-tailed Hawk is an opportunistic feeder but their most common prey are small mammals. They will also consume birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians and invertebrates. Diet varies with location and season.
- They perch themselves on high objects and trees in open areas, while scanning the ground for potential prey. When they attack, they dive slowly and carefully, with their legs stretched out so that they can grab prey with their sharp talons.
- FACTS - Red-tailed Hawk has a distinctive hair-raising, hoarse screech call. You have probably heard as filmmakers often use a recording of its call when hawks or eagles of any species appear in a movie.
