Spruce Grouse (Falcipennis canadensis)
- HABITAT - As its name suggests, the Spruce Grouse is essentially a non-migratory year-round resident species that lives almost exclusively in coniferous forests, though not necessarily in spruces. Their range is right across northern forests of Canada and Alaska as well as some areas in the northern USA.
- DIET - Its principal foods are the needles and buds of evergreens, although young birds consume large quantities of insects. Pine and spruce needles are the major food throughout most of the year.
During the summer, they generally feed on the ground, but forage almost entirely in trees during the winter.
- FACTS - When we see Spruce Grouse, they tend to retreat to thick underbrush to escape us rather than fly away. It times, they can appear to be quite tame.
