American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)
- HABITAT - American White Pelican breeds and nests in inland marshes inland in central North America. In the winter they head south as far as Costa Rica.
- DIET - White Pelican's diet is mainly fish. They feed in groups where they coopertively scoop up fish just below the surface.
- FACTS - In Ontario, American White Pelican breeds primarily in two locations: Lake of the Woods and Lake Nipigon. It was not until 2016 that the species was observed nesting on islands in Lake Erie. These images are from Lake Erie.
The American White Pelican is a large bird with a wingspan that can reach up to about 2.7 meters (nine feet).
