Great Egret (Ardea alba)
- HABITAT - The Great Egret is a widespread bird that is expanding it's range. It was once very uncommon in our area in Southern Ontario, but has recently been a more common sight. The also live in a wide range of habitat from secluded farm ponds to tidal flats.
- DIET - The Great Egret forages in shallow water feeding mainly on fish, amphibians, small mammals and reptiles, crustaceans and insects.
- FACTS - In North America, large numbers of egrets were killed for the plumage, mainly for the decoration of hats.
