Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola)
- HABITAT - Bufflehead’s breeding habitat is small ponds, usually in wooded areas. In winter they migrate to open water with shallow, sheltered waters of coves, river mouths, and lagoons, which have a muddy or gravelly bottom.
- DIET - Buffleheads dive for aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, and mollusks.
- FACTS - Buffleheads are North America’s smallest diving ducks. During the breeding season, they tend to stay away from rivers and large lakes that inhabit Northern Pike which will feed on small ducklings.
