Red-bellied Snake

Red-bellied Snake  (Storeria occipitomaculata)

Red-bellied Snakes are small friendly snakes that are rarely seen due to their secretive behavior. They are generally found in forest edge habitat, fields and meadows. These snakes overwinter underground below the frost line in mammal burrows, rock crevices or other cavities. Red-bellied Snakes are nocturnal and eat invertebrates such as slugs, earthworms, snails, grubs and insects.
