- Native/Non-native: Native to Eastern North America.
- Also called Stinking Benjaman. Since the plant blooms early in spring, before most bees are around, the flower has a smelly odour that attracts carrion flies as pollinators.
- An early spring flower that grows in deciduois woods before the leaves appear as it requires ample sun.
